The Recreation Committee meets the 1st Tuesday of each month (unless
there's a holiday) at 6:30 p.m. at the Downe Township
Municipal/Senior Complex, 288 Main St., Newport, NJ 08345.

ART
& ESSAY CONTEST WINNERS
The
Downe Township Recreation Committee recently had a Art & Essay
contest for the local children of Downe Twp. The theme for
this year's contest was, "Christmas Memories"....the
children, ages 11-14, had to write an essay, 100 words or less
of their favorite memory. The children ages 5-10
had to draw, color or paint a picture of their favorite
memory.
These
very talented children were awarded gift certificates for Wal-Mart
at the Downe Twp. Christmas party which was held last Saturday,
Dec 3rd.
The
winners for the art contest were:

3rd
Place - Annabella Piernikoski.
The
winners for the essay contest were:

LIGHTING & DECORATION CONTEST WINNERS
The
Downe Township Recreation Committee recently had their
2011
Holiday Lighting Contest throughout the township.....
For
the "Best Overall" category....
The
winner is Bill and Joanne Hayes of Dividing Creek
This
year's display was spectacular with nearly 40,000 lights that are
synchronized to music which
is broadcast on 107.5 FM.
They
are located on 506 Church St., Dividing Creek.

This
picture is of Santa and Mrs. Claus who recently visited the Hayes
family.

DOWNE
TOWNSHIP KAYAK/CANOE OUTING
|
|
The
Downe Township Recreation Committee hosted a kayak/canoe outing
Wednesday, August 10, 2011 at Shaw's Mill Pond in Newport.
This outing was instructed by Steve Eisenhauer and sponsored by the
NJ Natural Lands Trust. Steve is a natural on the water and
also with the children. In this picture, he is teaching them
how to handle a kayak and a canoe, and also taught them the
different species of fish in the pond.
It
was a beautiful day with perfect weather and no mishaps.
The children, as well as a few parents and grandparents, thoroughly
enjoyed themselves. The
DTRC supplied hotdogs, chips and a beverage for everyone.
The
children who attended this fun event were: Michael DeLuisi, Bonnie
Williams, Summer Seiger, Autumn Seiger, Cortney Abrams, Dillan
Abrams, Noah Walder, Nicholas Williamson, Madison Campbell, Tiffany
Neidigh, Michael Oniszczuk, Brandon McVey, John McVey and Cody
Jones.
There
will be another Kayak/Canoe outing held on Wednesday, August 24,
2011, from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm at Union Lake in Millville.
(Carmel Rd entrance). THIS EVENT IS FREE! A
beverage will be provided.
MUST:
provide own transportation, your own lunch, wear bathing suit and
water shoes. A permission/ liability form must be completed
before the day of the event. These forms can be picked up at
the 3 local post offices in Downe Township and the township
municipal bldg.

The Springer family, John, Rita and
sons Jonathan & Christian, residents of Newport, were
presented the "2011 Community Participation Award" by
Sharon Knipe at the Downe Township Recreation Committee's Back Home
Day Luncheon. In the picture are Jonathan Springer, John
Springer, Sharon Knipe and Rita Springer (Christian not in picture).
The Springer's are the second one's to
receive this award as Sam Blizzard, also from Newport, was the
first. Both recipients have attend the most Recreation Committee
events and other events throughout the township. They
are always ready to lend a hand whenever needed.
The Recreation Committee held their 3rd Annual Back Home
Day luncheon on Saturday, August 6th at the Downe Township
Senior/Municipal Complex. The crowd of 60 people, past and
present residents of Downe Township, enjoyed a covered dish lunch
and reminiscing of the days of the past.

DOWNE TOWNSHIP RECREATION COMMITTEE
4TH ANNUAL KITE FLYING CONTEST
The
Downe Township Recreation Committee recently had their 4th
Annual Kite Flying Contest with the Downe Township Elementary
School. This year, with the help of artist Marilyn
Keating, the students made their own kites thanks to an art
education grant.
The
winning class from Pre-K to 4th grade was Mrs. Jones' 2nd
grade.
Aiden
Kiley, a student in Mrs. Jones class, is shown with his very
creative kite. Aiden helped his class win because he was
first to have his kite up and it flew the longest time.
The
winners for 5th through 8th grades were:

Mrs.
Schumaher's Class for first kite up.
-
Mrs.
Garrison's class for longest flying time.
The
winning classes were awarded with framed certificates donated by
Jim & Kary Dunkel of Newport.
Special
ribbons, also donated by Mr. & Mrs. Dunkel, were awarded to
one student from each class for the "most artistic".
They
are: Nolan Herchelroth, Royce Felici, Robert Langley, Cara Reed,
Brandon Kiley, Vincent Latona, Dorothy Williams, Austin Elias,
Jason Shaw, Fenix Gray, Virgil Gale and Garett Coulter.
All
students received a participant's ribbon and a pizza/beverage
party donated by the DTRC.
The
committee would like to thank Principal Janice Santucci for
helping us make this event a huge success.
